Galaxy Newsbrief - August 28th, 2012

* Diversions of the Groovy Kind commemorates Jack Kirby's birthday by posting some of The King's amazing 1970s Captain America splash pages. Groovy indeed.

* Dan Nadel looks at the David Mazzucchelli Daredevil: Born Again Artist Edition, at The Comics Journal, with some great images from the book that will make you want it more than you already do, if you haven't got one yet.

* Here's a bunch of Spider-Man news, centered in the 700th issue of ASM. Related: Everybody seems to like Dean Haspiel's back-up story in the recent 50th anniversary issue.

* Uncomics: Christopher Allen looks at Grosse Point Blank, which I remember liking when I saw it in theaters. Chris's analysis of John Cusack's character type is terrific, and reminds me of a guy I knew in college who both looked a bit like Cusack and carried himself in the same manner. He had a somewhat affected way of speaking that, combined with his somewhat Sgt. Pepper-inspired wardrobe, prompted someone at a party once to ask if he was British; he responded, after a pause, "No, I'm just lazy."

* Uncomics: The Art of Manliness on how to shop for groceries. It took me years to figure out many of the strategies and tips you'll find here. If you have an Aldi in your area, use it. As the post says, the quality on most items is as good or better than more familiar brands, and you can save a huge amount of money. Just remember to bring a quarter for your cart (you get it back when you return the cart) and your own shopping bags (although they have some available cheap if you forget). One thing the post doesn't mention is that you'll sometimes find items that are very hard to find anywhere else; my son loves Jaffa Cakes, having heard them referenced on Spaced and in YouTube videos. Aldi is the only place I've ever found these delicious treats, and super-cheap, too.

* Uncomics: Seven reasons to publish a blog.
