Galaxy Newsbrief - August 20th, 2012

* Sorry for the short newsbrief today, I was in Vermont over the weekend and didn't have much time to work on the blog. It was sunny and in the mid-70s with low humidity, the perfect weather for a day in Vermont. Visited Northshire Bookstore, probably the best bookstore in 250 miles. Didn't buy anything, but I enjoyed browsing, and feel  like if I had tried harder I would have found the perfect book to end the summer with. It was still a nice day, though, and if you're ever in Manchester Center, I can highly recommend Thai Basil on Main Street. Just about the best Thai food I've ever had.

* Well, I've stalled all I can. Here's my one comics-related link: Official Hulk Fan #1 Mick Martin looks at Hulk: Season One (not a DVD, as I expected, but a comic book). I haven't looked at any of these Season One projects (or DC's version, Earth One) because they seem intentionally irrelevant. They're out of continuity with the in-universe version of the characters, they are usually by creators with little or no experience with the characters, and they seem specifically designed as short-term profit generators, not deliberate attempts to make good comic books with a new angle on long-established comic book icons. But I'm glad Mick liked this Hulk one; he deserves a good Hulk comic to read now and again.

* Uncomics: The man who played Commodore Matt Decker on one of the most memorable episodes of the original Star Trek, William Windom, has died. I never here the phrase "Don't you think I know that?" that I don't think of Windom's exquisite performance as Decker. Mark Evanier remembers William Windom. Mark also analyzes last week's shakeup at The Tonight Show. At Spinoff, Graeme McMillan has five questions about the new season of Doctor Who. Christopher Allen looks at a biography of The Psychedelic Furs. My favourite album by them, Heartbreak Beat, apparently is not fondly remembered.
