Galaxy Newsbrief - August 23rd, 2012

* I'll take the Frank Miller art from this minor piece from 1980 over almost anything he's drawn since. I really miss the obvious passion and desire to tell a story that you see on display there. It more than makes up for the occasional awkward body language (which I enjoy as being part of his style back then) or stock pose in the piece. It seems unlikely that Miller will ever again deliver something that purely comics. Bonus: That gorgeous Tom Orzechowski lettering. Did you know they wrote the lettering right on the artwork back in those days? Crazy, I know, but it made the end product more purely -- wait for it -- comics.

* There must be someone who cares that Rob Liefeld has quit DC Comics. Brian Wood makes a cryptic comment following the post, or at least a snarky one, indicating there's more to the story than that "Rob sucks." Well, sure. There might be more to it than just that.

* This just in: Geoff Johns apparently read Buffy Season 8.

* Wally Wood inks Gil Kane. Two of my all-time favourite artists. Wood inking almost anyone was always visually interesting (see his inks in the 1970s All-Star Comics, for example, reprinted a few years back in a Justice Society TPB); I think the first time I remember being intrigued by Wood-as-inker was that Daredevil cover he inked over Frank Miller's pencils, which you can see at the bottom of this post, or a larger version here.

* Uncomics: Here's my review of B.J. Mendelson's new book Social Media is Bullshit.
